Seeing Red

This Week’s Poll!

Recently, we told you about all the craziness going on in the Louisiana education system— money being funneled from public schools to private ones that teach bible-based math and use textbooks that say the Loch Ness Monster disproves evolution. (And we never even got around to telling you about that Louisiana charter school that forces homeschooling on any girl who refuses to submit to a pregnancy test.)

Never one to be outdone, the GOP over in Texas has decided to make it illegal to teach any form of critical thinking. They’ve even added that mandate to their state’s Republican Party platform – which to them was probably a no-brainer.

And now it turns out that things are just as exciting in the great state of Mississippi!

Mississippi is where we cynically thought all of those uneducated kids from Louisiana and Texas would eventually find teaching jobs. But there may not be that many kids left in Mississippi to teach, now that officials there have introduced a “school-to-prison pipeline” that actually jails kids for minor infractions. Sass back at the teacher? Caught chewing gum instead of tobacco? Off to the Big House, kid.

Yes, this is real. While conservatives in Texas and Louisiana are making sure kids aren’t taught anything useful in school, Mississippi has figured out a way to stop teaching them anything at all!

What is it about an educated populace that makes Republicans so nervous? Perhaps a clue can be found in a new lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department alleging that Mississippi’s prison program disproportionately affects black children and children with disabilities.

Surprised? Well, maybe there just weren’t enough minorities in prison to keep those Mississippi officials happy. God knows you let one of them loose and they might become president!

On the bright side, maybe those kids will learn a thing or two in prison. We just aren’t sure its anything decent Americans want young kids to learn.

So where is all of this leading? The GOP keeps piling it on, so surely this won’t stop here. If conservatives want to jail kids for minor school infractions like talking back to the teacher, what else is in store for American students? What do YOU think?
