Dumb or Dumber

This Week’s Poll!

Former vice president Dick Cheney should know a thing or two about picking a running mate. After all, he helped Gerald Ford pick his number two, so to speak, and, years later, he chose himself to be George W. Bush’s number two.

So it was big news this week when Cheney, in his first interview since the heart implant that gave him a second wind six months ago, went on record with ABC News in saying that John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin in 2007 was “a mistake.”

“I like Governor Palin,” Cheney said, calling her an “attractive candidate.” (Ugh. We’re no fans of Sarah Palin, but even we would prefer that her lack of qualifications not be tempered with an apparent assessment of the former Miss Wasilla’s looks.) But, Cheney added, “I don’t think she passed that test of being ready to take over.” Well, duh.

Cheney hopes that GOP presumptive prez nominee Mitt Romney doesn’t make the same mistake. Mitt’s in trouble: his ill-fated trip abroad — an attempt to burnish his foreign policy credentials — has left much of the world wondering if he is even less qualified to occupy the Oval Office than the notoriously dimwitted Palin.

But there’s still time for a game-changer! The media are abuzz with speculation about Mitten’s choice to round out his ticket. And his choice will speak volumes about his multitude of single-minded visions for our country. Given what we’ve learned about Romney so far, we’re expecting him to pick both of the Koch brothers. But, truthfully, it’s still anyone’s guess.

So let the speculation begin! Mitt’s VP has to make up for at least some of his shortcomings, which sets the bar pretty high. And we at the Lester & Charlie Institute of Forward Thinking want your input. Given the bad history the GOP has in picking running mates, what qualities do YOU think Romney’s looking for? Tell us!
